How to Search for Unclaimed Property in New Jersey

The NJ Dept. of the Treasury maintains New Jersey's official unclaimed property database. You can search at no cost directly through the portal above. No account, no sign-up, and no fee are required to search or to file a claim.

Search under your full legal name, any former names (maiden name, prior married names), and any name variations that may have appeared on accounts. Also search under the names of deceased family members if you are claiming as an heir.

If you find a match, initiate your claim directly through the official portal. See our complete search guide for tips on finding matches you might otherwise miss.

What Documents You'll Need

For a standard claim in New Jersey, prepare the following before you file:

For specific situations — heir claims, name changes, business entity claims — see our situation-specific guides for additional document requirements.

Processing Times in New Jersey

Standard cash claims in New Jersey typically take 6–10 weeks to process under normal volume conditions. Add 2–4 weeks during January through April (tax season), when claim volume increases significantly at most state offices.

Securities claims (stocks, mutual fund accounts, dividends) typically take 1.5 to 2 times longer than cash claims. Safe deposit box content claims require additional steps and can take 3–6 months.

Status checks: Yes (online). For states without online status portals, Tuesday through Thursday between 10am and 2pm local time are typically the lowest-volume call windows. See our complete processing times guide for what to do if your claim is delayed.

If Your Claim Is Denied

Denial is not the end of the road. Most denied New Jersey claims can be successfully appealed once you understand the specific denial reason. The most common causes are name mismatches, insufficient identity documentation, and missing property-specific documents — all of which are fixable. See our complete denial and appeal guide for step-by-step instructions.

Avoiding Finder Service Scams

You may receive letters or phone calls from companies claiming they've found unclaimed property in New Jersey and offering to help you claim it for a percentage fee — typically 10–40% of the amount. These companies are searching the same public database you can access for free above. Never pay a finder fee. See our finder service scam guide for more information.
